S/Y Marie Crew Profiles

Captain Wes Cooper - sy Marie
Wes Cooper

Captain Wes Cooper hails from New Zealand. His career in yachting has been a natural evolution.  He spent his youth participating in competitive dinghy sailing while he trained as a shipwright. He obtained his Master Shipwright Certificate after completing a full apprenticeship in Auckland. He then went down to the South Island to pursue his other passion—skiing. Eventually, after several back-to-back winters between the US and NZ, he decided to hang up his snow boots and over a period of six years, created a boat building business in Wanaka, NZ. At age 29 he flew to the other side of the world to pursue a career on the ocean.

For the last ten years, he has been aboard sailing yachts and has enjoyed over 150,000 miles spent blue water cruising in different parts of the world. He spent six years captaining a 38-meter ketch in the Fjords of Norway and Scotland's outer islands and then spent a couple of years navigating in Captain Cook’s wake through French Polynesia, Fiji and the Pacific. From then on the yachts got steadily bigger, culminating in his being First Officer and Sail Master aboard the world’s second largest privately owned Triple Masted Gaff Rigged Schooner, the 90-meter S/Y Athena. Now, as skipper of S/Y Marie, Wes has found his perfect yacht--and the perfect fit for his passions.

Spare time is a rare commodity for a Captain but when he does get the chance, Wes loves any opportunity to refresh his Commercial Helicopter Pilot's license and get up in the sky!

Wes is looking forward to welcoming future guests onboard Marie, providing them with a safe, yet exhilarating cruise wherever their fancy takes them.

Chad Theiken - sy Marie
Chad Theiken
(sharing rotational captain's position)

Captain Chad Thieken has been at the helm of some of the world’s finest sailing yachts for almost 20 years, and is thrilled to be joining Marie. From the academic to the applied, professional to past-time, yachting has always been his true course.

A graduate of Texas A&M Maritime Academy, Chad sailed on the Inter-Collegiate team, designed and built an International 14’ skiff, developed new techniques in the composites industry and completed a wooden boat apprenticeship.

Since then he’s sailed 165,000 nautical miles, with 9 transtlantics and 2 pacific crossings, on sailing yachts Hanuman, Ranger, Ethereal, Windcrest, Athena, Hyperion, Independence and Marie. Chad skippered the maiden voyage of the J-class Hanuman across the Atlantic in 2009 and in 2010 he and his wife, Kristi, welcomed their daughter Blake into the world.

Recently, he’s been relief captain and race crew, sold beautiful, luxury daysailers for Maine based Morris Yachts and studied naval architecture. He enjoys spending time with his family on Mount Desert Island, Maine, home to Acadia National Park where he races International One Designs competitively and is the current 2nd place North American Champion.

Jeff Rust - engineer sy Marie
Christopher Boogers
(sharing rotational engineer's position)

Born and raised in Queensland, Australia, Chris spent a lot of his youth at the beach. Surfing from a young age, this is still a hobby he loves along with other water board sports.

Apart from the sea, Chris is also passionate about Volkswagen Combi Vans. To date, he has owned and restored three of these old beauties. His most recent accomplishment is a 1976 ‘pop top’ model, in which he and Jasmin toured the East Coast of Australia for four months.

Chris completed his Plumbing and Gas fitting apprenticeship before moving to the UK. He lived in Edinburgh and worked in this field until he heard about snowboarding and the French Alps. Working as a site manager suited his hands- on skills. Chris spent two seasons working in the Alps. Not content to stay in one place, Chris looked to broaden his travel prospects by starting in the super yacht industry as a deckhand—toolbox in hand.

It wasn’t long before he took the engineering route and worked his way up to Chief Engineer. Chris has worked on numerous high-end sailing yachts, and is looking forward to sailing and racing on SY Marie.

Rotational Engineer - Tom Dawson
Tom Dawson
(sharing rotational engineer's position)

Born in Windsor UK, Tom grew up in Arles in the South of France, he keeps us very confused as to which is his mother land… Depending on him watching rugby or eating cheese!

Tom went to sports University with Sailing as his main option and after doing an exchange program in Granada, Spain the bug for travelling never let him go back. He has been working on Yachts for over 12 years, starting as an instructor he then skippered a small sailing boat across the Atlantic at the age of 21. This long trip made him switch to engineering as he didn’t like being at sea without knowing how to fix things, and he’s not too bad at it.

Tom met his wife on his last vessel and they have a little boy who has been to five different countries before the age of two. Tom and Chris used to work together on a large Sailing Yacht and now work on rotation on Marie. He spends his time off with his family renovating a house in his “home” town in the South of France.

Abbie was born in Buckinghamshire, UK where she spent her youth competing in a range of sports from Gymnastics to Netball. Abbie took a year out to travel Australia and the USA. Her active lifestyle and endless enthusiasm, led her to work two summers at a girls camp in Vermont where she sang loudly, taught gymnastics and became a qualified life guard. Having gained a BA degree in Marketing, Abbie worked for Nestle, which took her all over the World learning about people, their cultures and cuisines. With a revived passion for travelling and a flair for bringing people together, Abbie stepped away from the desk for pastures new in the yachting industry. Luke Grierson sy Marie
Luke Grierson

Born in Devon, England, Luke grew up close to the coast and spent many of his summer weekends fishing off his father's boats around the south coast. With the odd trip across the channel, Luke shortly fell in love with the idea of a life at sea.

Most of his early boating took place aboard small powerboats, so it would have seemed the logical choice would have been to choose the Motor Yacht life. Nonetheless, a chance day on a lake instigated his appreciation for sailing.

With a newfound love of sailing and a goal of working on a super yacht, Luke completed his yacht master certificate. Luke has gained valuable experience in his yachting career and so far, he hasn't looked back.

In his spare time, Luke enjoys playing golf and uses the traveling aspect of the career to try out as many courses as he can. A keen fisherman and new to diving, a lot of his free time is spent around the water enjoying all it has to offer.

Luke is very much looking forward to making your stay onboard as exciting and fun as it can be and hopes to see you soon.

Jocie Tysoe

Jocie loves to chase the summer and will generally spend her spare time diving, hiking, fishing, camping, but also often as not, can be found with her nose in a book. DECKHAND - Greg Strauss
Greg Strauss

Born in Westport, Connecticut, Greg has spent most of his life by the coast. He and his family enjoy boating on the greater Long Island Sound where he has taken to wakeboarding and fishing. It was during these New England Summer days where he developed his love for the sea and the sun. Growing up, Greg was also a very dedicated and competitive athlete. His main sports of focus were football and lacrosse. Greg attended Virginia Tech University, where he earned a Bachelors degree in International Business. During his time there he continued his passion for competitive sports and was a member of the men’s lacrosse team. He also took part in a study abroad program where he lived with a host family in Spain, studying Spanish language and culture and travelling throughout the country. His love for travel and adventure has been fostered through a “try-everything-once” attitude. It was during a family trip to Antigua where Greg was introduced to the yachting industry and his dream of joining a crew began. As the deckhand on MARIE, this is Greg’s first fulltime position onboard. He looks forward to the busy worldwide itinerary and the opportunity to advance his sailing and nautical skills while partaking in a lifetime experience.
